TV SHOW WATCHMARE: TALES FROM THE CRYPT SEASON 1

TALES FROM THE CRYPT SEASON ONE
HBO
1989 168 Mins.
6 Episodes
Horror/Comedy
Created by Steve Dodd

Season one of Tales from the Crypt like the rest of the series is a mixed bag at best. There are of course supreme  high points and than some overly mediocre ones. The series starts off a little on the weak side with "The Man who was Death" but quickly rebounds with the now iconic "All through the house". For better or worse this is a fantastic series there are lulls but that hypnotic borderline annoying laugh from the crypt keeper is always a welcome introduction.

EPISODE ONE: THE MAN WHO WAS DEATH
William Sadler stars. Directed by Walter Hill N/R contains language, violence, gore, nudity and sexuality.

A prison executioner is laid off from work and takes up vigilante justice as his new hobby. The proceedings play out expectedly with a little charm from Sadler in the lead. In the end it plays a little drawn out even at 30 Mins. **.75/5

EPISODE TWO: AND ALL THROUGH THE HOUSE
Mary Ellen Trainor and Larry Drake star. Directed by Robert Zemeckis N/R contains language, violence and gore.

A remake of the original Movie segment with Joan Crawford "House" is a perfect episode of "Tales". A greedy wife kills her husband on Christmas eve and finds herself in a predicament when an escaped serial killer dressed as Santa Clause gets in on the action. Trainor is wonderfully over the top in the lead and Drake is terrifying as the villain. The episode is edge of your seat with a tone of seductive dark humor and executed with pizazz by Zemeckis. *****/5

EPISODE 3: DIG THAT CAT, HE'S REAL GONE
Joe Pantoliano stars. Directed by Richard Donner N/R contains language, violence and gore.

Although not wholly successful the third entry in the series possesses a intriguing style about it. It centers on a man who undergoes a experiment to transfer a cat's nine lives to him. It works and he sets himself us a high profile carnival act when he is killed over and over again. The outcome is a bit predictable as are all the twists but it's all executed with a winking eye that works most of the time. ***.25/5

EPISODE 4: ONLY SIN DEEP
Lea Thompson stars. Directed by Howard Deutch N/R contains language, violence and sexuality.

One of my favorite episodes. Deutch directs this trashtastic take on a young, cocky prostitue who sells her good looks to a voodoo broker to entrap a rich bachelor. Things of course go horribly wrong. This episode is so fun and although I don't feel as though it reigns as a perfect example of the best of "crypt" excels at it remains one of the best entries regardless. ****.25/5

EPISODE 5: LOVER COME HACK TO ME
Amanda Plummer stars. Directed by Tom Holland N/R contains language, violence, gore, sexuality and nudity.

Another prime example of a great "Crypt" episode. A newlywed couple retreats to the wife's mansion where her new husband plans to murder her for her money but things go awry when a dar past is rvealed with more going on than he would think. The culmination of events is cool and shocking and Plummer has a blast in the multi faceted role. ****.5/5

EPISODE 6: COLLECTION COMPLETED
M. Emmett Walsh stars. Directed by Mary Lambert N/R contains language, violence and gore.

This one has a darkly comic, classic feel to the proceedings. It centers on a cranky newly retired man who gets quickly annoyed by his wife's pets and it explores his new hobby of taxidermy. The culmination is morbidly delightful and ambert's direction is playful and kinetic. "Collection"  is another fine example of the series. ****/5

Overall the first season of Tales is one of the best sure it's only limited to six episodes and that may be the reason it works as well as it does.

Overall Rating: 4.25

and now for the season's Crypt keeper's best look!

Still haven't made it around to this one either. I love the concept but I've heard mixed reviews. Animals all around the world have started attacking people. A Zoologist Begins to investigate the reasons why before it's too late. Ratings started low and held steady throughout it's run. It still has been green lit for a second season during summer 2016.

HORRORESQUE: TURBO KID

TURBO KID
Epic
2015 Color
93 Mins.
Sci-Fi/Comedy
Munro Chambers, Laurence Lebeouf, Michael Ironside and Edwin Wright star.
Written and Directed by Francois Simaurd, Anouk Whissell and Yoann Karl Whissell
N/R contains language, violence and gore.
Although not necessarily a horror film there's no mistake in saying that "Turbo" is steeped in the genre. The film was obviously made as a loving homage to the 80's and early 90's films soaked in gore and set during a post apocalyptic time frame. I think it's important to note that although it tries to be clever enough to work as a send up of the films it's trying to imitate. Although somewhat successful it does seem to partially fall into the traps it so desperately wants to avoid. Set against a post apocalyptic 1995 landscape a kid obsessed with "turbo Man" comic books finds an enthusiastic robotic friend. And after she is kidnapped he dons a super charged weapon and takes on the tyrannical overlord to save his new girlfriend. Loaded with blasts of explosive over the top practical effects gore Turbo Kid is a fun time but it does seem to overstay it's welcome a smidge. Also the performances aside from Apple seem a little short on charisma although her and Kid do sport some nice chemistry. Overall it manages to be a fun but forgettable semi mess. ***/5

13 BEST NEW HORROR MOVIES ON NETFLIX RIGHT NOW!

13. ALL CHEERLEADERS DIE
Anchor
2013 color
89 Mins.
Horror-Comedy
Written and Directed by Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson
N/R : contains violence, gore, language, sexuality and nudity.
All Cheerleaders Die can easily be dismissed as a straight to the dump trashfest based on it's poster and title. And truth be told it is indeed a trashfest but in all the right ways. Written and Directed by Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson this horror comedy is a unique experience all it's own. What starts out as a fairly generic genre mash up soon expands it's heights with an inspired storyline, witty dialogue and an overall fun feel. The film centers on a group of mean cheerleaders who die and are brought back by a witch. They soon discover too survive they must feed on horny teenage boys.  Although it plays more like a junior adaptation of the video game Lollipop Chainsaw there's much to enjoy here. The performances are expectedly goofy and the killing scenes appropriately gory but the camp value is intentional and beyond enjoyable. It may never reach the heights of McKee's masterpiece May but I don't think it's aiming too.  ***.5/5

12. FROM THE DARK
Abandoned/Workshed
2014 color
90 Mins.
Horror
Niahm Algar and Stephen Cromwell star.
Directed by Connor McMahon
N/R : contains language, violence and gore.
Drenched in a thick atmosphere of nail biting tension From the Dark is a modern day creature feature from Ireland. Executed with dread inducing cinematography that makes the proceedings feel simplistic and unnerving. The film centers on a young couple driving across the Irish countryside whose car gets stuck and they wander over to a desolate farmhouse for help. But they soon come across a strange, aggressive, intelligent creature hell bent on feeding on them. It's a fairly generic setup but the film is executed with a dark pizazz that makes the proceedings feel fresh. It also has one of the most innovative, kick ass final girls. That being said the film does get a little repetitive but is a hidden gem without a doubt. ***.5/5

11. LAST SHIFT
Magnet
2014 color
90 Mins.
Horror
Juliana Harkavy stars.
Written and Directed by Anthony DiBlasi
Rated R for language, violence and gore.
I was assuming this was a remake of Let Us prey from the trailer and setup. But although it does possess some similarities it's definitely a different film all it's own. The film centers on a rookie cop spending her first night at a soon to be closed down Police station. One in which her father was murdered by cult members some years ago. The setup seems stolen from "Prey" but what follows is what makes the proceedings unique and more effective in my opinion. The film moves along with a slow burn nature as she is haunted by the dark spirits of the dead cult members culminating in an unexpected finale. The central performance from Harkavy gets stronger as the film goes along and the movie possesses some of the most nightmarish imagery in quite some time. Although not entirely original Shift does add a dose of refreshing adrenaline to the proceedings making for an immersive, creepy watch. ***.75/5

10. TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN
Bad Hat
2014 color
90 Mins.
Horror
Jill Larson and Anne Ramsey star.
Written and Directed by Adam Robitel
Rated R for language, violence, gore and nudity.
You make be rolling your eyes when hearing this is yet another found footage possession flick but "talking" is a truly inspired watch. Centered on the title character whose supposedly suffering from early onset Alzheimer's and whose condition is being documented by a film crew. The film soon moves into some disturbing territory as we are confronted with the realities of senior dementia and than ultimately possession. As her psyche and body begins to deteriorate the central performance from Jill Larson is brave and undeniably effective. The special effects from Face off alumni Gage Hubbard is beyond impressive and truly nightmarish. All the proceedings are executed with a totally immersive impact that leaves you feeling haunted long after the credits roll. ***.75/5

9. HAUNT
IFC Midnight
2014 color
86 Mins.
Harrison Gilbertson and Liana liberato star.
Written by Andrew Barrer
Directed by Mac Carter
Rated R for language, violence and gore.
An outcast teen moves into a new house with his family and meets a mysterious teenage girl and together they find a creepy radio in the attic and begin to play around with it unwittingly releasing a dark force. It all sounds very goosebumpish but this is a scary flick. It moves along slowly with some spurts of nightmarish imagery and than a disturbing finale . The two leads have great chemistry and the film is well executed. Although it falls into the more teen realm of horror flicks the R rating keeps things edgy enough to satisfy most genre fans. ****/5

8. THE DAMNED
IFC Midnight
2013 Color
87 Mins.
Peter Facinelli, Sophia Myles and Nathalia Ramos star.
Written by Richard D' Ovidio
Directed by Victor Garcia
Rated R for language, violence and gore.
After a family in involved in an accident they find refuge in a nearby farmhouse. However, they soon discover a scared, young girl locked in the basement and release her. Accidentally releasing an ancient evil demon that possesses people by body jumping. The only way to stop it is to the lock the being back in the basement. Although the proceedings play out somewhat expectedly the solid performances lend the material an unexpected emotional girth. The film is also directed confidently always keeping the suspense going and the film has some truly effective nightmare sequences involving the possessed. It all culminates to a sad, haunting finale that stays with you long after the credits have rolled. ****/5

7. EXETER
Vicarious
2015 color
91 Mins. Horror
Stephen Lang, Kevin Chapman, Kelly Blatz, Brittany Curran, Brett Dier, Gage Golightly and Nick Nicotera star.
Written By Kirsten McCallion
Directed by Marcus Nispel
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality, nudity and drug use.
There are some movies that are just meant to be fun. They're not meant to be over analyzed or critiqued in every capacity. So if that doesn't sit well with you it would be best to skip Exeter. How ever if it does sound appealing you will have a blast with Exeter. From Marcus Nispel the director of the superb Chainsaw remake and the dismal F13 remake comes his new genre film which is a return to form for him thankfully. The film centers on a group of hard partying teens who decide to gather at an old mental asylum accidentally releasing a demonic entity after a night of drunken, drug induced debauchery. The film is hella gory with kick ass death scenes, kinetic pacing and luminous cinematography that doesn't make sense but fits the proceedings perfectly. As in the Chainsaw remake Exeter is a pop horror mashup of genre clichés expertly executed in a fun, intense fashion. It's true the film doesn't have much going on under it's skin but it's so much fun it's easy to overlook the film's obvious flaws in the name of bloody good entertainment., ****/5

6. THE CANAL
Orchard
2014 color
92 Mins.
Horror/Thriller
Rupert Evans and Antonia Campbell Hughes star.
Written and Directed by Ivan Kavanaugh
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality and nudity.
It's really important to know that The Canal is a slow burn horror thriller. But if you put in the effort you'll be rewarded with some for the most horrific, nightmarish moments ever seen on film. The film centers on film archivist David who discovers his home was the sight of brutal murder. Soon after he begins to suspect a spectral presence in the house and than his wife goes missing. It may not sound that exciting but the performances are strong and the direction and screenplay are executed in a way that make the proceedings feel completely immersive. We are front and center for each traumatizing event after another all leading up to a surprising and unique finale. Don't watch alone! ****.25/5

5. THE DEN
IFC Midnight
2013 Color
81 Mins.
Horror
Melanie Papalia stars.
Written and directed by Zachary Donahue
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality and nudity.
In a flood of cheaply made found footage internet themed horror movies you may feel desperately like you don't want to see another one. But it would be a crime as a horror fan not to see the horrifically effective "the Den". The film centers around a young woman who receives a grant to do a sort of social experiment by chatting online with strangers. She unfortunately comes upon a young woman being murdered and can't tell if it's real or fake and finds herself and her family and friends targeted by a sadistic killer. The proceedings play out unexpectedly and because of the execution it feels so real and scary. The film's pacing especially towards the end feels unrelenting barely leaving you time to breathe as it marches towards it's inevitable and deeply disturbing conclusion. ****.5/5

4. HOUSEBOUND
Semi prof
2014 color
107 mins.
Horror/Comedy
Morgana O' Reily stars.
Written and Directed by Gerard Johnstone
Rated R for language, violence and gore.
A young woman on house arrest finds herself at home with her annoying mother by court order. Soon after arriving she begins to suspect her surroundings may be haunted by a hostile spirit. Every thing you think you may know about this film is probably false and I'm not gonna ruin it for you. Housebound is a mega fun, scary thrill ride. I won't give anything away but it all leads to an inspired, unexpected,  goretastic finale you won't see coming. ****.25/5

3. CREEP (2015)
Blumhouse
2014 color
82 Mins.
Horror-Comedy
Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass star.
Written and Directed by Patrick Brice
Rated R for language, violence and nudity.
You'd be hard pressed to find  a more unique, charming and overly disturbing film than Creep. Unfairly dumped to a limited release Creep features an intriguing, simplistic premise, expertly executed. The film centers on an aspiring film maker who answers a Craig List ad for a one day job in a secluded mountain area. When he meets his client he discovers he has cancer and a baby on the way with a desire to film some of his last moments for his baby when it's grown up. But as the day goes on his client begins to exhibit bizarre behavior and begins getting caught in lies building to a profoundly disturbing revelation. Mark Duplass is excellent as the film's complex creeper delivering his lines with a uncomfortable but charming zest. He makes his villain likable in an uncanny way. The film is directed confidently with an intentional awkward angle making the proceedings feel overly uncomfortable and suspenseful. Creep is without a doubt a hidden gem that is sure to become a cult classic. ****.5/5

2. AMERICAN MARY
Evolution
2012 color
103 Mins.
Horror
Katherine Isabelle stars.
Written and Directed by the Soska Sisters
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality, nudity and drug use.
A young medical student unable to pay her bills is seduced into the world of underground surgeries after a traumatic event. The Soska Sisters debut film is a wonderfully seductive and original experience. Katherine Isabelle shines in the lead and the events unroll unexpectedly always with a tone of very dark humor and slight desperation. A new world of nightmarish surgical atrocities and revenge is unraveled as you follow along the wonderfully developed and performed lead character. American Mary has already garnered a small cult following soon to grow deservedly so in the upcoming years. Bizarrely addictive! ****.75/5

1. KRISTY
Weinstein
2014 color
86 Mins.
Horror/Thriller
Haley Bennett, Ashley Greene and Lucas Til star.
Written by Anthony Jaswinski
Directed by Oliver Blackburn
Rated R for language, violence and gore.
A young woman stuck at college for thanksgiving break is attacked by a group of psychotic cult members. It's a simplistic premise with a great location and executed near perfection. Unfairly dumped to a limited release Kristy would have been a fantastic big audience experience and a sure fire hit. Still watching it at home the film is still wholly effective and clap out loud exciting. Although not necessarily scary especially since out final girl becomes the hunter against her tormentors the film is nail bitingly suspenseful. The film is without a doubt one of the best genre features to come out this year! ****.75/5

HORRORESQUE: HUNGER GAMES MOCKINGJAY PT. 2 AND THE HUNGER GAMES FRANCHISE

HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2
Lionsgate
2015 Color 136 Mins.
Sci-fi/Thriller
Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherand, Jullianne Moore, Jena Malone, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Willow Shields, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Claflin and Stanley Tucci star.
Written by Suzanne Collins
Directed by Francis Lawrence
Rated PG-13 for language violence and gore.

It's been a long road since the first Hunger Games hit theaters and now we find ourselves in the final stretch of things. When the franchise began Ms. Lawrence wasn't very well known despite an Oscar nomination but she's since become a full fledged movie star with now multiple Oscar nominations and one win. When going into the final addition to this franchise it's hard not to feel the fatigue that set in from the last film. There's really no reason why they should have been split up especially with the limited amount of story they had to go on. That being said the last one wasn't all bad it did have it's moments, but didn't feel like a complete film. Although more successful in this final chapter there is still a feeling of slight in-completion. The last two installments would have made one great film without a doubt with some editing and fine tuning. Instead we are left with the first being pretty good and the second being very good instead of great. The movie picks up right where the last one left off. Peeta is still a train wreck. Katniss is still trying to process everything and be that person for everyone and Gail is still useless. With a prime intent to assassinate President Snow Katniss journeys to the capitol and undergoes with a squad of soldiers the most sadistic hunger games of them all.It all culminates in a grim but realistic fashion that has a surprising amount of depth. I'm just happy they stuck to the book and didn't wuss out. Showing the horrors of war and the manipulation of the public through politics. It's a surprisingly insightful watch which matches or maybe exceeds the subtext of the first two films. This time around the traps are more horrific than ever from Meat Grinders to disintegration rays to hot oil and grotesque creatures. There's a scene filled with so much suspense and intensity I nearly ripped my boyfriend's arm off. In the end it's a satisfactory conclusion but I still don't feel it can stand on it's own as an individual film. It definitely improves upon the action quotient of the previous installment but looses some of the development and investment along the way. Scenes that should have more impact feel a little rushed over but are still effective nonetheless. Lawrence of course shines even more so this time around than any other chapter. She infuses Katniss with fierce kinetic energy, making her vulnerable and strong but always relatable. Hutcherson is also great this time around as he has been in every movie as Peeta. He really adds layers of emotion of devotion to each of his scenes. Banks a little odd in the previous installment feels more herself here and although she doesn't have much to do she has one solid final scene. The rest of the cast is fine but t just don't feel like they've been given much to do. All in all Hunger Games has been an impressive franchise never afraid to show the ugly side of the material like so many other Hollywood productions. That approach alone makes it one of the most satisfying and intelligent series and one that will be deservedly remembered. ****/5

THE HUNGER GAMES: This is the film that set it all up and it is also in my opinion the best of the bunch. The directorial focus lacking in the other productions made the proceedings feel more immersive and relatable. The film established each of our characters and gave them dimensions way beyond their years. Besides the film's brilliant execution it also possesses a disturbing emotional resonance throughout. Never glorifying the violence and sort of making the audience pay for wanting to see it. It is without a doubt one of the best movies of it's kind ever made. *****/5

THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE: That being said this second entry is nearly as good as the original in a completely different way. It's both glossier and more ugly than the first. The film does a nice job of upping the action quotient in truly stunning ways and also manages to further develop the characters and the storyline making every moment really matter and giving the film an even more intense emotional resonance than the first chapter. My only gripe is with the films sometime confident and too glitzy execution****.75/5

THE HUNGER GAMES MOCKINGJAY PART 1: What should have been the most emotional and intriguing chapter in the franchise feels stretched out and disconnected to an extent. Although the film does have some truly effective sequences and is successful in furthering each character's exploits some times in not the best way. It all just feels a bit cut short when something big finally happens the credits roll. ***.5/5

NEW BLOOD: KRISTY

KRISTY
Weinstein
2014 Color
86 Mins.
Horror/Thriller
Haley Bennett, Ashley Greene and Lucas Til star.
Written by Anthony Jaswinski
Directed by Oliver Blackburn
N/R contains language, violence and gore.

I have absolutely no idea why Weinstein dumped this solid, effective thriller to a quiet Netflix release. Rated 4.75 out of 5 stars by users. Kristy centers on a young woman staying at her college campus during Thanksgiving break. At first it seems to be a blessing with all the peace and quiet but after visiting the near by gas station for some Ben and Jerrys she comes across a strange young woman who calls her Kristy. Soon after she returns to her dorm creeped out and passes out in the recreation area. When she comes to she soon discovers she's not alone and the security guards are dead. She is than hunted by three masked assailants and the young woman. Members of a cult targeting seemingly privileged young women across the US. Ultimately she has to find the will to fight if she wants to survive the night. This is a great movie! And there are many reasons why it works so well. The first being Haley Bennett as Justine her performance feels genuine and relatable and it's easy to root for her character because of how smart she is. The second is the direction from Oliver Blackburn it's confident, well paced and stylish making the proceedings feel edge of your seat and completely immersive. The third is the cinematography it drenches the film in a constant state of innovation and suspense. With looming wide shots, creative angles and lighting. A prime example would be the scene in the swimming pool it's perfectly separated between both environments and than when immersed in water you can't help but hold your breath with Justine. The fourth is that fantastic setting usually a film like this will promise a larger format but this film actually delivers as we run along side our heroine as she is chased and attacked on a large college campus until finally becoming the aggressor. And finally Ashley Greene who plays the film's main villain she's really freaking creepy. Kristy is a solid genre entry that deservedly would have been a hit. The film is absolutely entertaining and better than any genre films to hit since It Follows. Weinstein missed a real opportunity here but lucky for us we can watch Kristy at the touch of a button. So if you have a netflix account seek it out right now, it's that good! ****.5/5

TOP 13 FINAL GIRLS

13. BETH-HOSTEL PART 2 (2007)
Played by Lauren German
Say what you want about Hostel 2. Even though I personally found it to be a vast improvement over it's predecessor. But Beth is one bad b*tch.  At first a smart but seemingly harmless wall flower. She morphs into a monster during the film's final 15 mins. of which the last five will never be forgotten by anyone whose seen it. In a nutshell she turns the table on her captor, castrates him and feeds his privates to a dog and than goes after the people who entrapped her and her friends to begin with. Lauren German plays the role with a subtle strength and is more than believable during her memorable cinematic evolution.

12. CLARA-REC 3: (2012)
Played by Letecia Dolera
Now I know most fans of the franchise find this to be the weakest entry. I however think it's the strongest. It's definitely not the scariest but it is the most emotionally resonant. One huge reason for that is the romance between Clara and Koldo. Centered around their wedding day which finds their reception over run by a raging zombie virus. Clara and Koldo fight to get to one another but she really takes the reigns . Starting off the film as a happy blushing bride she soon transforms into a wedding dress clad warrior. The most impressive scene has her fight down a horde of vicious zombies with a chainsaw and a self inflicted slit wedding dress. It's without a doubt something to be hold as she decapitates and decimates in the name of Love. Making her one of filmdom's top final girls.

11. MARYBETH DUNSTAN-HATCHET 2 AND 3(2010/2013):
Played by Danielle Harris
It's no doubt that the original Hatchet is the best film of the series but Marybeth Dunstan doesn't really become her destined bad ass self until she's played ferociously by the one and only Horror heroine Danielle Harris of the Halloween films. Picking up right where the original leaves off our hero Marybeth continues to fight back this time being the aggressor. After being forced back into the swamp she finds herself face to face with Victor and the results are astounding attacking him with chainsaws, knives and axes and culminating with a truly insane face fisting. Legendary.

10. ELVIRA-ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK(1988):
Played by Cassandra Petersen
Known by her fans as the Mistress of the Dark. Back in 1988 she got a wide release theatrical film which is without a doubt one of the best of it's kind. A horror comedy in which Elvira plays herself as her origin is revealed and she battles a demonic Uncle. It could have been easy to take on the damsel in the distress role but when she's not starting bar fights and fighting monsters. She's an independent, strong minded, fiercely funny horror heroine. The last battle is one for the books to be sure from iron breaking breasts, to flying stiletto heels and a bazooka. Elvira keeps on fighting whether it's her fantastically funny and diverting one liners or a fierce kick in the nuts! There's no question why the immensely talented and gorgeous Elvira is still around today!

9. TINA SHEPARD-FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII THE NEW BLOOD(1988):
Played by Lar Par Lincoln
In 1988 Jason Voorhees went up against his fiercest foe and the only one who gave him a real run for his money, well at least until Freddy. Why you may be asking yourself. Because Tina has telekinetic powers. And despite a slightly hammy premise it is executed in a very serious and believable tone. Tina spends most of the running time thinking that she's crazy seeing the horrific masked man murdering sexed up teens. There are a few explosions of telekinetic anger but it all leads up to a truly epic battle. As Tina struggles with her emotions and control and finally ends up going one on one with Jason. Defending her hunky would be boyfriend Nick she bends tree roots, flings TVs, throws couches and lots of other cool shit. All the while Jason looks perplexed as Tina continues her reign of telekinetic terror upon him which culminates with a resurrection. It's my favorite Friday of the bunch, maybe it's nostalgia or maybe because it tried something new. But regardless Tina kicked some major hockey mask ass.

8. ALICE -RESIDENT EVIL 1-6 (2002-2017)
Played by Milla Jovovich
Few horror heroines manage to balance beauty with brawn as well as Milla Jovovich does. From her first moments in 2002's surprise hit Resident Evil. Alice is portrayed with subtle bad assedness by Milla. She cuts, shoots, decimates, decapitates and blows up her undead enemies. From horrific zombies to grotesque creatures with giant tongues and hulking madmen with giant axes. Through five and an upcoming sixth film she increased her take no prisoners skill set from being an expertly trained warrior to a mutated heroine with telekinetic powers. Despite each challenge thrown at her she continuously prevails and always looks amazingly stylish dong it.

7. ERIN- TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2003):
Played by Jessica Biehl
It's not hard to see why this voluptuous leading lady landed on the top of the list. Her portrayal of Erin was as bad ass as they come. With only a tied up tank top, a pair of fitted jeans . She battled a 300 lb. Leatherface and R. Lee Emery as one of the most sadistic characters ever in a horror film. No doubt her greatest enemy was just trying to stay dry in the movie she tried to save each and every one of her friends. Even going so far as to try and carry one and making the ultimate sacrifice of morality in murdering another instead of leaving him suffering. When she finally faces off against one of the villainous fiends she lops his arm off with a hatchet and when she faces off against the other she hits him with a car. Again, and Again and again. Biehl never was able to repeat her success in the horror genre. But Erin will go down as one of the most fierce female horror heroines of all time.

6. BARBARA-NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1990)
Played by Patricia Tallman
When portrayed by Judith O' Dea in the original shocker. Barbara was a demure, silent victim who spent the film in shock until her gory demise. But in 1990's superb remake Barbara is a complex, smart, strong woman as portrayed brilliantly by Patricia Tallman in one of the strongest performances in genre cinema. After being attacked in a cemetery and losing her brother Barbara makes her way to the infamous farmhouse. And after a quick bout of shock her survival instincts kick in and she decimates a zombie with a fire poker. As the film moves along she becomes stronger and stronger always clever and a step ahead everyone else. She is deservedly the only survivor never giving into the drama and keeping her focus.

5. NANCY/HEATHER- NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST. 1, 3 AND NEW NIGHTMARE (1984-1994)
Played by Heather Lagenkamp
I met Heather Lagenkamp a few years ago. She still looked great and was a very sweet lady. As most of you now she's still very active in horror community. She's the narrator of the recent, brilliant Nightmare on Em st. documentary Never Sleep Again and she also was the focus of her own documentary I am Nancy. When she starred in the original Nightmare so many years ago she portrayed Nancy as a normal, nice girl at first but when her friends start getting murdered by that infamous dream stalker it's hard to think of any other genre heroine who was as smart and innovative when facing her opponent. At times she wasn't just equally matched but seemed to excel her situation researching bobby traps, protecting her friends the best she could, unraveling the mystery and facing down her fear in the most clever way possible. She had grown from a mousy girl next to door to the ultimate survival girl. She continued her heroics as she faced down Freddy again in Nightmare 3 trying to help the surviving kids of Elm St. now in a psychiatric ward face down their nightmarish, wise cracking foe. Unfortunately, she wasn't as successful the second time around and ended up being killed but not before saving the others and supplying the information so that Freddy would be laid to rest. Obviously it didn't work because Freddy returned again and again but never had a match quite like Nancy until New Nightmare when she would meet him again this time as her actual self Heather Lagenkamp. The brilliant, underrated seventh entry is one of the best and smartest horror films ever made and she manages to reconnect with the things that made Nancy so strong to begin with. This time around defending her son and putting Freddy to bed once and for all. Nancy is without a doubt one of the most complex and kick ass horror heroines to ever grace the silver screen.

4. LORI STRODE-HALLOWEEN 1,2,7,8 (1978-2002)
Played by Jamie Lee Curtis
Everyone knows that Lori Strode as portrayed by Jamie Lee Curtis is the original Scream Queen and set the bar for all the kick ass smart girls to follow. John Carpenter's classic is still a masterpiece and one of it's biggest charms is it's leading lady. At first introduced as the smart, shy, good girl next door she soon takes charge when attacked by the Shape. Using everything in reach to fight back from knitting needles to wire hangers Jamie Lee struck Michael again and again. She than faces him down again in a near vacant hospital as the night continues. Drugged up she still manages to escape him time and time again but it isn't until 20 years later when she returns once again in H20 and this time she means business. After discovering he's her brother in the second installment she has gone into hiding and has a teenage son. She's the principal of a secluded, privileged high school. And than he finds her but this time around there no running as she becomes the aggressor facing him down once and for all. All leading up to a decapitation after some much needed battle. Unfortunately they made a sequel and in this chapter in the film's opening scene she meets her demise but not after staging a trap for her monstrous brother. Through her over twenty year career tangoing with the cinematic madman Jamie Lee made Lori an iconic self sufficient, smart, horror heroine well deserved of her iconic status.

3. LT. ELLEN RIPLEY- ALIEN 1-3 (1979-1992):
Played by Sigourney Weaver
There may not be anyone more bad ass in moviedom than Ellen Ripley played by the iconic Sigourney Weaver. She defined the term final girl before it was a category. She started off a little demure in the original but by the film's end she had upped her courage and beat down the title beastie with smarts by blowing it out of the airlock. Than as if that wasn't enough she was woken from hyper sleep along with her kitty for round two with a planet of the nasty E.T's this time assisted by some colonial marines. Ripley works a loading docker, drives a AV and shoots off various weaponry all while keeping up with the rest of them and maintaining a maternal instinct by protecting a young orphan girl name Newt and having a little side romance with hunky Corporal Hicks. It all culminates to an epic battle with the queen alien and Ripley in a loading dock power suit. And than for the final time is she is once again awakened out of hyper sleep after a tragic accident this time. She battles her villainous foe for the last time. This time with no weapons, a short new do and on a prison planet she faces off against a stray and the queen alien stewing inside of her. The Director's cut has a more action friendly Ripley but both feature a woman whose tired of running and in the end pays the greatest cost. The fourth disastrous sequel features a clone Ripley which isn't the same but word on the street is Ellen will get a redo as the erase the events of the third and pick up where the second left off. Ripley over three films saved countless lives and inspired a generation of fierce female roles in future films.

2. SIDNEY PRESCOTT- SCREAM 1-4: (1996-2011)
Played by Neve Campbell
Only one other ultimate final girl has gone through more heartache, loss and self growth than Sidney Prescott in the Scream series. Targeted from the first film by her boyfriend and his accomplice. Sidney fights continuously to save her life and the lives of the people she cares about. Unfortunately because she has some of the worst luck ever she doesn't manage to save many people. But she does manage to beat the crap out of and finally kill her stalkers. All until the sequel when a new couple tries her again this time in college. Although most of her friends get brutally murdered which include her best friend and her boyfriend sadly. She ultimately faces her attackers down and ends them. When she returns for the third time she's gone into hiding. Trying to minimize her interaction with people. Untrusting but smart she's taken more than a few self defense courses and is ready for anything that comes her way. But as people are attacked and murdered one by one to lure her out she eventually returns in the open to face down her ultimate nemesis. Which turns out to be her brother. A young man denied by his mother and whose been manipulating the situation from the beginning. In an edge of your seat showdown she prevails once again but barely this time taking down her villain once and for all. Years later she returned as a griseled genre veteran to battle a new group of teen attackers with motives all their own. They of course don't stand a chance as Sidney portrayed brilliantly by Neve Campbell becomes the ultimate survivor once again refusing to die.

1. BUFFY SUMMERS-BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (1997-2003)
Played by Sarah Michele Gellar
Anyone whose seen the Buffy TV series knows that no one has gone through as much shit as Buffy Summers. She's experienced more loss, more pain, more heartbreak than any other genre heroine. When Buffy started out she's nothing more than a silly valley girl but after discovering her destiny and embracing it reluctantly she battled evil time and time again. She's lost many friends and family as well as making some of the toughest decisions a character has ever been faced with. A prime example would be the heart breaking finale of season 2. When she had to kill the love of her life to save the world. Going through everything, even being ripped from eternal peace in heaven in season 6 she's kept her composure and played her role. Always willing to sacrifice herself time and time again. In fact she'd died more than a few times. But like her undead enemies death can't keep this good girl down. Portrayed brilliantly by Sarah Michelle Gellar, Buffy faced her destiny and is willing to sacrifice herself to save the world and those she loves. She's ultimately successful in her battle at the series end as she descends into hell to stop an emerging evil army. And as Sunnydale is sucked into the ground a light smile plays across her face realizing that not only is it over but she's survived and been victorious in her struggle. All of these reasons make Buffy the ultimate final girl!

FRIDAY THE 13TH RANKED

We've lucked out with a bunch of Friday the 13ths this year! Sadly this is the last one for a while and for each of them I have marathoned the movies. We are finally in the final stretch of things and there's no time than better to revisit the classic slasher series especially since it's the last Friday the 13th til 2017. :-(

Below you will find the movies ranked best to worst as well as stats and other tidbits of info about each chapter. Enjoy and don't forget to subscribe to my blog!

1.FRIDAY THE 13TH:
Paramount 1980 color 95 Mins.
Adrienne King, Betsy Palmer and Kevin Bacon star.
Written and Directed by Sean S. Cunningham
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality, nudity and drug use

It's hard to judge the original Friday against all the others because it's so different. But it is the best. I don't think it's the most entertaining of the series but it has the best story and the twist ending is executed brilliantly. This one features a fresh batch of counselors getting crystal lake ready for some campers. They of course start getting knocked off one by one by a mysterious slasher in increasingly horrific ways until only one final girl is left standing and the killer is revealed.

Originally destroyed by critics the original Friday was a box office success with a budget of $500,000 and a total domestic box office of $39.7 million and a worldwide box office of $59.7 million. It may seem like small potatoes now but it's considered to be one of the most successful independent films of all time making over a hundred times it's budget. In the years since it's release critics have revisited the now cult classic with positive reactions.

The film set the bar for slasher films to follow with almost every aspect of it being copied to death in every way imaginable. It also introduced us to the iconic villain Jason Voorhees even though he wouldn't don his famous hockey mask until the third entry and features one of the most iconic genre scores of all time.

The film also featured a young studly Kevin Bacon in a speedo and featured some incredible makeup effects by Tom Savini which include a throat spearing and an axe to the head amongst many others. The film holds up surprisingly well and still features one of the best jump scares in cinematic history.

Also check out the link below for the original final girl Adrienne King's winery website which feature Chiller White, Midnight Merlot, Moonlit Chardonnay Survivor Syrah and Cabin A Sauvignon!

5 OUT OF 5 MACHETES!

2.JASON LIVES: FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI:
Paramount 1986 Color 86 Mins.
Thom Matthews, Jennifer Cooke, Tony Goldwyn and CJ Graham star.
Written and Directed by Tom McLoughin
Rated R for language, violence, gore sexuality and nudity

Following the disastrous sequel the new beginning the original idea for this sequel had Tommy Jarvis as the film's villain but because of the horrible fan reception they went back to the basics. But with a new, more bad ass interpretation of Jason. This time around and for the first time in the series the proceedings take on a supernatural element as he is resurrected from his grave by lightning on a stormy night after being dug up by some curious peeps. He arises with superhuman strength, covered in maggots and moves forward with some of the most insane death scenes of the series. Which include a head twist off as well as a body fold. This time around Tommy Jarvis returns to Crystal lake to stop the masked madman for once and all. Unfortunately some new camp counselors have descended upon the cursed property with little kids in tow.  It all leads up to a head splitting finale on the lake!

Besides the supernatural edge with the material the film also introduced the franchise to action sequences including shoot outs and car chases. And a brand of self referential humor that pre dated the Scream franchise and who many believe to be the inspiration for it.

The film was a surprising critical success being the best reviewed since the original and featured some of the franchises best characters which include a sexy Thom Matthews as Tommy Jarvis and a peppy rebellious cops daughter in Jennifer Cooke as Megan.

The film unfortunately suffered from a bit of franchise fatigue with a total domestic box office haul of 19.4 million but still holds up as the most entertaining of the series and the deserved fan favorite.

5 OUT OF 5 MACHETES!

3.FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD:
Paramount 1989 Color 88 Mins.
Lar Par Lincoln, Kane Hodder, Kevin Spirtas and William Butler star.
Written by Manuel Fidello and Daryl Haney
Directed by John Carl Buechler
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality, nudity and drug use.

Continuing on refreshing the franchise with unique concepts. For the first time in the series Jason meets his match. He goes head to head with the final girl of the franchise in my opinion Tina played solidly by Lar Par Lincoln. A troubled young woman with telekinetic powers. It all sounds a bit hammy and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't but the film's final twenty minutes are everything!

Although the film was met with negative critical reception initially it has grown to become a fan fave.  it featured what is now considered to be the franchise's definitive Jason by fans as portrayed by the amazing Kane Hodder. Adding personality as well as a slight vulnerability to the character. Jason has never been more intimidating with an exposed rib cage and spine he crawls out of the murky depths to wreak havoc on some visiting campers which include an axe to the face, a party horn to the eye, a head crushing and many more gory delights.

Besides the unique approach the film is a little light on the plot side, but hey anything to get you to the goods right! And it also features some remarkable Jason makeup by the director John Carl Buechler especially during the film's finale when his mask is squeezed off (watch it to understand).

Growing up this wasn't just my favorite Friday but one of my favorite movies ever. But after having recently revisited the 6th entry as well as this one I couldn't help but rank this remarkable film a close third. Unfortunately like with the previous entry the audience fatigue continued. The film debuted at no. 2 with 8.2 million and only made 19. 2 in it's entire run.

And speaking of that finale TVs, Couches, Roofing, light bulbs, nails, tree roots and so much more are thrust upon a confused Jason by our fierce little horror heroine.

It also has a franchise best poster.

4.75 OUT OF 5 MACHETES

4.FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER:
Paramount 1984 Color 91 Mins.
Peter Barton, Crispin Glover, Corey Feldman and Judie Aronson star.
Written by Barney Cohen
Directed by Jospeh Zito
Rated R for language violence, gore, sexuality and nudity.

Originally planned as the final entry in the franchise the film it was obviously followed by sequels after being a huge commercial success at the time. The film is fun but doesn't bring anything new to the franchise besides a movie geek edge with a focus on special effects. Picking up after the events of 3 Jason returns to stalk a family which includes a young Corey Feldman whose obsessed with Makeup effects a new batch of horny teens which includes a gorgeous Peter Barton and a young, adorkable Crispin Glover.

The film was met with negative critical reception but is considered one of the fan's top faves. The film opened with a than stellar 11,183,148 million and finished off with 32,980,880 million

Speaking of the film's awe inspiring makeup effects which were done by genre legends Tom Savini and Kevin Yagher among a few others. Some examples are the goodies that fill young Tommy's room, the last battle against Mr. Voorhees has his head slowly sliding through a machete as well as a machete to the face, a crushed head in the shower and a slow knife through the throat while a young woman eats a banana.

4 OUT OF 5 MACHETES

5.FRIDAY THE 13TH PART III
Paramount 1982 Color 95 Mins.
Dana Kimmell, Paul Kratka, Jeffrey Rogers and Richard Brooker star.
Written by Martin Kitrosser and Carol Watson
Directed by Steve Miner
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality, nudity and drug use.

Riding the 3D craze part 3 is best viewed in guilty pleasure mode because there is so much here to celebrate if not taken seriously. The plot synopsis is generic as some teens get hacked up by our homicidal villain. But what sets this entry apart to most genre fans is that this is the chapter where Jason receives his now iconic Hockey Mask.

In this entry most of what works is what doesn't from the cheesy 3D effects to the stereotypical and borderline offensive characters, the splendidly campy performances and who could forget that disco score. Some of the 3Ds best moments include a wired snake, a popped out eyeball and someone getting hacked in half while doing a handstand.

The entry was met with negative critical reception but became the number two grossing horror film that year behind Poltergeist. With only a 2.25 Million dollar budget the film made 36.6 milion and was the first film to finally displace ET at the top of the box office.

Since it's release the film has garnered a cult following because of it's over the top characterizations and absurd plot twists including a gang of bikers. Couple that with the hammy 3D scares and you have a movie that's so bad it's good. All of this is topped off by the most over dramatic performance from a final girl Chris who feels the need to scream and shake repeating the same words over and over again. One of the films more subtle comedic gem moments comes when Vera the token Hispanic girl goes into a grocery store and is told by the clerk that they don't except food stamps before she draws anything from her purse. She immediately stops reaching and hangs her head low. Comic gold.

As for the effects some of the kills are pretty fun but don't really hold up. The head squeeze and the handstand among the best. All in all it's a fun time and the most ridiculous entry of the franchise including when he went to space.

3.5 OUT OF 5 MACHETTES

6.FRIDAY THE 13TH PART II:
Paramount 1981 Color 87 Mins.
Amy Steel, Adrienne King, Russell Todd and Betsy Palmer star.
Written by Ron Kurz
Directed by Steve Miner
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality, nudity and drug use.

Following up the surprise success of the original Paramount went with a safe approach not straying to far from the formula of the original that made it so popular. This entry picks up 5 years after the events of the original as a new killer stalks the would be camp counselors.

The film initially received negative critical reception. In the years since it's original release it has been celebrated as the film that introduced us to our iconic, hulking killer and cemented the formula that would make the films such a cash cow.

Originally the film was planned as the second part in an anthology series based on the Friday the 13th superstition. But after the success of the original they went with a direct sequel that would have Jason taking up where his mother left off, punishing naughty teens at camp.

Adrienne King, the original final girl from the first movie opted for a smaller role because of a stalking situation after starring in the first film.

Although it wasn't as big a success as the original the film still made over 21 million on a shoestring 1.2 million dollar budget.

Even though the film isn't great it still has it's moments including some neat little death scenes the machete to the face and the spear through the couple being the most effective and an inspired edge of your seat finale. It all leads up to a final jump scare that aims to be a shocking as the original and although a little disturbing is more confusing than anything else.

This entry also features two of the franchises's hottest guys in Russell Todd who played Scott and is now a silver fox talent agent and Tom McBride who played Mark confined to a wheelchair for the film but not handicapped in real life. An openly gay actor at the time. Sadly he passed away in 1995.

3.25 OUT OF 5 MACHETES

7.JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY
New Line 1993 Color 91 Mins.
John D. Lemay, Kari Keegan, Kane Hodder and Steven Williams star.
N/R contains strong language, violence, gore, sexuality and nudity.

Marking the masked madman's first tango with New Line. Jason Goes to Hell is without a doubt a mixed bag at best. But no one can say that the helmers didn't opt for a creative angle to tackle the material. Released on August 13, 1993 against Needful Things and Man's best friend. The supposed final entry found it hard to naIl down an audience making only 7.6 Million and ultimately only making 15.9 Million even with that famous ending that would eventually lead to Freddy Vs. Jason. It was still considered a decent success however with a low budget of only 2.5 Million.

Instead of opting for a more traditional Friday format the film approached the title madman as a sort of evil entity that can be transferred from person to person in the form of a slug like creature until finally being reunited with his surviving blood line where he can be reborn. It's all a little confusing, doesn't make much sense is ripped apart from many better films, hell even Evil Dead to some degree. But "Hell" does have it's charms. Most of which are quite possibly the best and most inventive death scenes of the series. Which include but are not limited to someone getting their face fried, people being basically torn apart with many bones and appendages broken but the film's crowning achievement best viewed in the film's unrated cut is a tent sex scene with a hot stud that ends going horribly wrong as a sphere is jammed through the girls lower mid section and ripped upwards. It needs to be seen to be believed.

Along for the ride is John D. Lemay who you may remember from The Friday the 13th TV series and genre legend Kane Hodder strutting his stuff once again as Jason. The film initially received negative reviews and hasn't grown in popularity since than. It's sloppy, just check out the beginning when the woman in the towel running barefoot in the woods has boots than slippers than socks all in plain sight and it isn't a traditional Jason film. But that finale when Freddy reaches up from the depths of Hell and grabs Jason's mask inspires goosebumps and for better or worse the film is creative and unique among the franchise and does offer a fare amount of fun.

3 OUT OF 5 MACHETES

8.JASON X
New Line 2002 Color 91 Mins.
Kane Hodder, Lexa Doig, David Cronenberg and Lisa Ryder star.
Written by Todd Farmer
Directed by James Issac
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality, nudity and drug use.

It was only a matter of time before we joined our title villain in space. Jason X released on April 26, 2002 was an immediate bomb. Even though there had been a 9 year gap between sequels the audience never got on board with the new reboot. It made a paltry 6.649 Million opening weeend and made 16, 659 worldwide on an 11 million dollar budget. It was also met with negative critical and audience reception even though it arrived on a wave of buzz.

The film starts off in 2008 as Jason is captured by scientists and frozen. He awakens 455 years later on a space ship after a school field trip accidentally finds and defrosts him. Now on a spaceship on it's way to Earth 2 our campy killer targets a new group of horny teens.

Jason X is a bad movie. But I'd be lying if I said it doesn't have it's charms. There are some really inventive killing scenes,  The best being a young woman whose face gets dipped in liquid nitrogen and than smashed into a table. But there are other more inventive angles as well like the way approach the material . Everything is done with a welcome sense of humor. And even though the film isn't clever it's throwback to 80's horror is appreciated especially during it's finale, when we visit camp crystal lake again. Unfortunately it can't save a film that doesn't seem to know what a good Jason movie is made out of. Instead opting for over the top performances and silly plot twists.

The film also introduced a new design for Jason as he is repaired by a futuristic medical device. He is reborn made of metal with a shiny new mask.

A young adult book series continued the story line in 2005 and was also adapted into a comic series. The death scene which involves liquid nitrogen was also the focus of a mythbusters episode.

For better or worse Jason X continued to try and reinvent the franchise. Although ultimately it was a fail Jason X has enough good and so bad it's good going on to merit a viewing.

2.75 OUT OF 5 MACHETES

9.FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN
Paramount 1989 Color 100 Mins.
Kane Hodder, Jensen Daggett and Peter Mark Richman star.
Written and Directed by Rob Hedden
Rated R for language, violence, gore sexuality and nudity.

Few movies are as disappointing as Friday 8. I remember being a kid and I couldn't wait til this film came out. especially having become obsessed with the 7th entry. I thought initially it would take place in Manhattan with Tina his telekinetic nemesis. But instead they opted to do just another Friday film. Not a bad thing but going in with the expectation of taking the action to the dirty streets of NYC left much to be desired. And worst of all the film mostly takes place on a boat to Manhattan.

The setup is simple Jason is resurrected from his water logged prison and stakes himself out on a boat filled with horny teachers heading to the big apple. He systematically begins to slaughter them in really mediocre ways which include a young woman simply being choked to death. When he finally gets to the city there are a few inspired bits which include but are not limited to him interacting with a street gang and a so bad it's good boxing match on a rooftop. It all leads up to the most confusing and ridiculous finale of the whole franchise.

The film opened with 6.2 Million and only made 14.3 million in total. It did face tough competition from Pet Sematary, Nightmare on elm st. 5 and Halloween 5 but still deservedly failed and hit a franchise low.

Since it's release the film hasn't garnered any more acclaim from critics or audiences and was ranked by Entertainment weekly as the 8th worst sequel ever made. Still there are a few bits that don't make it worth it but still add some amusement to the failed proceedings.

2.5 OUT OF 5 MACHETES

10.FRIDAY THE 13TH : A NEW BEGINNING
Paramount 1985 Color 92 Mins.
Juliette Cummins, Todd Bryant, John Shepard and Melanie Kinnaman star.
Written by Martin Kitrosser
Directed by Danny Steinmann
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality, drug use and nudity.

You would figure the director of cult classic Savage Streets would have had more fun approaching the Friday franchise. Instead what stands is a boring retread of the same ol same ol which doesn't add anything new to the series. Considered by most fans to not even be a part of the franchise because of the absence of Mr. Voorhees himself.

The film is centered around young Tommy Jarvis now grown up as a hot teen whose mentally disturbed and doesn't even take place in Crystal lake. Instead setting the events at a sort of home for troubled youths in Pennsylvania.

The kills are mostly mediocre but the film does have it's moments. The final chase is inspired, it has one or two impressive death set pieces and despite failing miserably it did try something new. The film was originally setup to start a new trilogy with a new killer. But because of the poor fan reception they returned with Tommy Jarvis and the original madman in the sixth chapter.

The film received negative critical reception and started to decline the franchise's box office. Still the film was a success it opened with over 8 million at number 1 and finished it's run with 21.9 million with only a 2.2 million dollar budget.

The film had set a series high body count at the time and also is remembered for having a excessive amount of sex and nudity. Still the film is a mess at best and is the second worst franchise installment in my opinion.

2 OUT OF 5 MACHETES

11.FRIDAY THE 13TH (2009)
New Line 2009 Color 97 Mins.
Jared Padalecki, Danielle Panabaker, Amanda Righetti, Derek Mears and Willa Ford star.
Written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift
Directed by Marcus Nispel
Rated R for language, violence, gore, sexuality, nudity and drug use.

2009 saw the eventual reboot of our beloved franchise. In the hands of the man Marcus Nispel who reinvented the Chainsaw legacy to greatness. Expectations were high and the finished product is the worst entry in the Friday series. You would think it wouldn't have been hard to remake or reestablish another Friday film. Sex, Nudity, Drugs, Kills, right. But you'd be wrong. The Friday films have all of those elements and repeatedly but the most successful chapters were not defined by them. The main problem with this execution is that it takes itself way to seriously and never delivers on any of the things that made the franchise popular to begin with. And worst of all it's ridiculously stupid.

Set up as a reboot the film glosses over the events of the original re imagined and goes right to Jason as an adult. He murders some campers. There is a marijuana field and a magical school bus as well as some questionable tunnels throughout Crystal Lake that he lives in. A group of teens hits up the area for some good times and comes across the most boring reinvention of the killer in the entire series. The film is never scary or suspenseful and has no imagination. the characters are dull and lifeless. In fact the best part of it is that Jared Padalecki is hot. It all leads up a stupefying last moment of epic proportions.

Although met with negative critical reception the film grossed more than 19 million on it's first day out grossing many of the Friday films for their entire run. It finished up with over 43 Million for the holiday weekend making it the biggest horror opening of all time. It also had one of the biggest drops in cinematic history dropping 85.8 percent from Friday to Friday and an overall 80 percent on it's second weekend. It ended it's impressive domestic haul with 65 million and 91 worldwide. The film is handsomely filmed but is a disappointment on every other level.

There are still ongoing plans for a sequel but with the poor recption it's looking like the film series will have to rebooted once again. There was speculation of a sequel being set in the winter and another idea was it being found footage.
