SIGNS (2002)

I'm not a big fan of Shylaman's (Sixth Sense) stuff although I do tend to enjoy it somewhat the awful Unbreakable, happening and after earth aside. The movie is a edge of your seat suspenser in glorious Hitchcock style about a little family at the cusp of a full scale alien invasion. The movie is creepy, intense and filled with solid performances from Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Abigail Breslin and Rory Culkin. The only real issues I have with the film is instead of keeping it simplistic we are burdened with the goofy Shylaman twists. Although it doesn't come together completely it's an exciting film that holds up quite well.

D-RAILED (2019)

This is not a good movie by any means but it's strangely watchable. While on a train ride that goes off track a group of murder mystery gamers who have been hijacked. Soon after they crash into a river and find themselves hunted by some cool ass creatures that are quite impressive especially considering the budgetary constraints. The concept sounds cool but they never really do it justice. Theres dome fun bits here and there but it's never really scary and it all can be a bit confusing especially the trying to hard ending. Had they kept it simplistic they have pulled off a little gem. Instead it's just overly mediocre but there are definitely worse ways to pass the time.

PREY (2019)

Blumhouse produced this nifty teen version of Predator. It centers around a young man who goes on a sort of survival retreat after his father is murdered. After arriving solo he soon discovers hes not alone. He gathers up his strength to try and survive until the boat comes back. It's a suspenseful little horror flick even though it's a bit underdeveloped. More character and story work would have really hit the concept home. All in all not a bad watch.

SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE

I really wanted to like this movie. All the right elements are in place for a nifty retro slasher. A sorority, a killer a spooky house, a big slumber party but it's just mostly kinda boring. They throw in some awful, pretentious nightmare sequences that may be flashbacks making it all confusing and stalling out the pacing from having any real intensity. Sure there are some moments here and there and once it gets to the goodies it has a bit of a nice flow. But it's all so overly mediocre with meh death pieces that unfortunately its forgettable. The only reason I think people remember this one is because of its trashy, superior sequel.

BEWARE! THE BLOB

This is undoubtedly one of the worst films I've ever seen. Being a fan of the original and remake I just had to check this out even though I never heard anyone really talk about it. The plot if you could consider it one has some of the blob defrost and start wreaking havoc on a town. The movie is sloppily put together and I read on wikipedia that most of the scenes were improvised. It's truly sad that made hardly any effort to update the material or add anything to what could have been a very lucrative franchise. This is most likely one of the big reasons not many showed up for the Superior 88 version. The special FX are dismal from red plastic paper made to look like the creature to close ups of jam and shadow effects. I would say it's entertaining in a guilty pleasure sort of way but honestly it's just hot cinematic garbage.

I AM NOT OKAY WITH THIS S1 (NETFLIX)

Sophia Lillis (It) stars as Sydney Nocac a confused, troubled young woman who begins to discover she might have telekinetic powers. I don't want to give you the wrong impression because the rollout of this information happens slowly and in between his some great angst well written and genuine teen drama dealing with sexuality, self discovery and so much more. Lillis is great in the lead but it is Wyatt Oleff (It) who steals the show. His Stanley Barber is charming, charismatic and wonderfully unique. When the ball finally gets rolling it's pretty awesome. The last few episodes are truly great with the finale being quite impactful. All in all it's a solid show if a little on the short side. I can't wait to see what happens.

NOS4A2 SEASON 1

I was kind of on the fence about watching this. And after starting I wasn't very impressed. But about a third of the way through it grabbed hold of me and I was hooked. Its really such a unique and creepy concept as kids are being taken from their homes and in some cases their parents murdered. We than meet a young woman Vic McQueen played by Ashleigh Cummings of Hounds of Love. She has an awful home life and with the help of a young charasmatic psychic named Maggie Leigh played by an impressive Jakhara Smith (Pilgrim) she discovers she has certain gifts. Anytime she wants to find something she can go to her very own psychedelic bridge and it will take her there. I know it all sounds a bit goofy but they pull it off very well. Unfortunately a supposed man named Charlie Manx played by a maniacal Zachary Quinto (Star Trek) is hunting those with gifts to feed his own hunger. I won't say anymore because I don't want to ruin anything but it's surprisingly great, disturbing, creative and quite unique.
