IFC Midnight has been around for a while making their stake in the genre. But not until recently has the quality of their product improved so drastically. The Hallow although not an amazing a movie is a very good one that was unfairly denied a wider theatrical release. Lately there have been a barrage of films warning us against the Irish Countryside from the brilliant In fear to Bloodlands and From the Dark to name a few. All of which making sure I never visit that area despite my love for Braveheart and Far and Away. Because there's been so many the proceedings feel a little familiar at first but in the mid section the film takes a turn into monster territory and becomes an edge of your seat thrill ride. Featuring some impressive creature design and memorable practical and cgi effects. The Hallow's most impressive feature is it's unpredictable story line and kick ass finale as well it's engaging emotional resonance that makes everything that much more effective. The film centers on a young couple and their new baby who move into their new home in the Irish countryside. The area is drenched of course in folklore and the locals continuously warn them to stay out of the woods and for good reason. The woods are populated by volatile creatures intent on stealing their child. More impressive is how they approach the creature angle slowly starting off with an inspired viral edge. The performances from the leads are solid and the screenplay and direction from Corin Hardy hold a lot of promise for the new film maker. ***.75/5
