This is the time of the year is visit this uneven but festive franchise. So here's another entry in the killer Santas saga to wet your appetite before the big boys arrive.
1989 90 Mins. Samantha Scully, Bill Moseley (House of 1000 Corpses) and Laura Harrington (Mulholland Drive) star. Written by Rex Weiner (Adventures of Ford Fairlane) Directed by Monte Hellman (Trapped Ashes)
As far as killer Santa movies go this is actually one of the better ones and that's not saying much because it's a very low bar. It centers on a young Blind woman named Laura who is unwittingly connected psychically to a comatose Ricky after the events of the original film. He of course awakens on Christmas eve while she, her brother and new girlfriend are on their way to Granny's house. And he begins his Killing spree. Red triggers him and he leaves the hospital with a fishbowl on his head, a patient gown and a very zombiesque attitude. After a few murders along the way he eventually arrives to his prize and the showdown commences.
The movie is fairly entertaining but any type of tension is brought down by dredged out lead performances. Samantha Scully who plays Laura feels like she's comatose and uninterested in what's going on. It gets so underwhelming it actually becomes quite hilarious. And the biggest laugh here is a young Bill Moseley who I'm assuming is following director's orders to play his Ricky like he's just risen from the local Graveyard and really has very little purpose whatsoever. All in all its a genetic slasher flick but it's just so bad that it's good. I try to watch this one every year and am even more impressed by its festive goofiness. My favorite part is when Bill Moseley addresses the audience in a tux with the bowl on his head and says very slowly " And a happy new year". Premium comic gold.
