1984 95 Mins. Catherine Mary Stewart, Kelli Maroney, Robert Beltran and Mary Woronov Star. Written and Directed by Thom Eberhardt Rated PG-13 for language, violence and gore.
How this movie ever got away with a PG-13 Rating baffles me. Not that it's crazy extreme but it does have some pretty disturbing shit. From cannibalistic zombie humanoids to blood hungry scientists and some pretty graphic scenarios. Released on November 16, 1984 the movie was a pretty decent success on a budget of 3 million making 14.4 million.
It has since endured deservedly becoming a cult classic and inspiring so many film makers which include Joss Whedon. The film actually inspired Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Set around Christmas and the arrival of a comet that wipes out pretty much all of civilization unless you were encased in steel of some sort. Two Valley girl sisters end up surviving the Apocalypse only to come up against zombie like Survivors hungry for Flesh and a government organization hungry for their blood. Although the movie is pretty light hearted it doesn't veer away from the dark stuff.
Overly entertaining and cleverly written and executed the film is a great example of the creative films that populated the 80s. A time when rad concepts were in abundance at the multiplexes with varied qualities of execution. If you haven't seen this amazing little gem or haven't in a while there's no better time than the present holiday.
RATING= 8.75 KILLER SANTAS OUT OF 10
