25 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS HORROR DAY XIII

I don't think anyone really wanted or needed a Black Christmas remake. I mean the original is still the best version and the 2006 redo offered some Trashtastic slasher movie goodness. And now we have this version and surprise, surprise but it's actually pretty damn good. It's also a movie that needed to be made and one that needs to be seen.

BLACK CHRISTMAS
2019 92 Mins. Imogen Posts, Aleyse Shannon, Cary Elwes, Brittany Grady and Lily Donahue star. Written and Directed by Sophia Takal  Rated PG-13 for some language, violence and sexually.

How this movie got away with a PG-13 Rating I'll never know. Although it may not show much gore, it's pretty damn brutal. I don't wanna ruin anything but basically it's about a Sorority that finds themselves under attack by a fraternity. And basically like a good ol' horrorfest they have to fight to survive the night.

There's so much I loved about this movie but before I get into that I wanna say that it's only a mediocre traditional horror film. But a new, exciting reworking of the genre. Sure it could have benefitted from some more gore and maybe some harsher language but the message is so relevant and it's really something that needed to be made. In fact I'm gonna make a bold statement and say that it does a pretty good job of reinventing genre cliches.

Sophia Takal spins a powerful feminist yarn not about man hating or women fighting but a message about how women and men should view each other as equals . It's about having and Possessing the power you're given as an individual and overcoming society's definitions about sex. Something that clearly needs to change especially within the genre. For decades we've seen so many misogynistic horror films but the great ones always had strong female characters like Halloween, Nightmare on elm st., Texas chainsaw Massacre, Aliens and hell even the original Black Christmas.

We're entering a new time for horror in which the definition of women in films are being challenged and exploitation is not being tolerated. I'm not saying everything should be censored but there is value in supporting what's right. Because of films like this young women will feel stronger and men more understanding . At times it felt like a witty episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I absolutely loved the exorcist 3 homage. It's  not a perfect film there are some slight pacing issues and at times it's a little uneven but it makes up for it with some stylish cinematography and solid performances as well as its message. Basically if all or any of that appeals to you, you should definitely check this out. It's a wild, intense, bold horror film that you'll be thinking about long after the credits roll.

RATING= 8.25 KILLER SANTAS OUT OF 10
