Sam Raimi's follow to his masterful horror/comedy Evil Dead 2 finds our hunky, smart ass hero right where he left him, in the middle ages. This time around the cartoonish violence has been amped up and we are treated to a whimsical, three stoogish go around with the now comical deadites.  Gone are the days when they were disturbingly scary instead replaced with action figures. Not that any of this is bad. Although i do think this is the weakest of the franchise including the remake because it's the lightest on the horror. I do feel it's still a pretty great flick with another iconic performance from a gorgeous Bruce Campbell and lots of cool make up with a visual aesthetic to match. It also has some of the best, campy one liners ever spoken. It all of course culminates with a damsel in distress and an inspired Harryhausen style battle with the army of the dead. Even Bridget Fonda shows up for some fun with a cameo in the films flashback sequence. Although a critical success Army of Darkness was made for around 11.5 million barely itching by with 12 million dollars at the US box office. It has since however accumulated a well deserved cult status, been adapted into countess comic books and graphic novels and is getting it's long awaited sequel in a kick ass Starz TV Show entitled Ash Vs. The Evil Dead which looks to have more of the scares and bloody mayhem this entry missed out on. ****.25/5
