Rated R for language, violence and gore.

Nick Damici stars as a blind veteran who moves into a retirement community where the residents are dying from dog attacks. After he gets attacked he realizes it's more than just a dog, it may be a werewolf. Eventually he begins the preparations to defend himself against the threat because no one believes him. He begins to work out, set traps and gets some silver bullets. It all culminates in a surprising and suspenseful finale you won't see coming. The setting lends itself to the concept rather well and instead of suffering from unoriginality the proceedings feel fresh. The movie is paced well and to be honest is even a little scary. The practical effects are welcome and mostly well executed in an inspired manner but some of the action scenes look a little funky and unintentionally funny.Nick Damici is solid in the lead. he adds depth and emotional resonance that makes his character believable and relatable as does Ethan Embry as his son. Their relationship is one of the things that grounds the movie in a refreshing manner. Lance Guest so adorable in the Last Starfighter feels a little odd here but the rest of the supporting cast fill it up well enough. There are a few laughs throughout but it's mostly kept in a more serious tone. It's one of the more original entertaining films of it's subgenre to hit in some time. Not joining the ranks of Dog Soldiers or Ginger Snaps but way above the ranks of the syfy garbage scattered about. Speaking of the practical effects I really liked that the werewolves had a slight muppet like quality similar to the effects executed in Waxwork.***.75/5
