GOTHIC (1987)

I don't know how this movie isn't a bigger thing especially as a staple of queer genre cinema. Ken Russell's (Lair of the White Worm) hallucinatory take on the night when Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein features a solid Natasha Richardson as Shelley, a ridiculously sexy Julian Sands, a handsome and twisted Gabriel Byrne and a sexually exploitative future Peter Pettigrew a.k.a. Timothy Spall. The movie works as an erotic, nightmarish, trippy fever dream filled with disturbing imagery. At times it can feel like a retro pop video but it works in its favor making for a wild, creeptastic ride.

4/5
